During the First World War on  May 7, 1916 a battle between Russian and Austrian armies took place. Over 2000 soldiers were killed and buried all around the area. In 1916 the graves were exhumed and new cemeteries were founded. Each of them received its own number. Several of them are in the Brzostek community, in the following villages: Bukowa (No. 218), Brzostek (No. 222, 223, 224, 225), Gorzejowa (No. 227), Januszkowice (No. 217), Klecie (No. 220, 221), Przeczyca (No. 228), Skurowa (No. 229), Zawadka Brzostecka (No. 226). The cemeteries and their monuments were designed by two architects Gustaw Rossmann and Michal Matscheko von Glassner. Each monument displays number of soldiers buried and various poems by Hans Hauptman, composed in the honour of fighting soldiers.
